The press in a democracy enjoys the status of Fourth Estate along with the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive. Press has to act as the watchdog, friend, guide, philosopher, crusader, leader, counselor, teacher, helper, communicator, pacifier for the masses. In fact it is expected to play different roles in a given situation. Such multiplicity of roles and diversity of popular expectations in a pluralistic democracy calls for a highly intellectual, interactive and socially oriented ecosystem in keeping with our ancient culture.
Despite more than 200 years of existence modern media in India has still not evolved a well-defined growth pattern. Socio-economic, political, and technological changes have been pushing media in different directions creating a state of utter confusion. There is an urgent need to define parameters and checkout long-term societal goals for the Indian press.
This objective can be met by developing a first-rate academic facility which will take into account the latest trends and activities in media industry, media practice and media training and network them into deliverable modules.
It is in this background that a strong platform for learning, research and training needs to be developed. The SIMS is designed to meet this objective. The School, being set up in furtherance of the vision – empowerment through knowledge, shall strive to bridge the gaps between media education, training, research and application at all levels. In course of time, it is hoped, the SIMS will provide a much-needed platform for interaction among all stakeholders and contribute towards shaping the media of the 21st century India.
Unlike other subject’s media academic is dynamic and ever-evolving as media moves with society which is not static. This is the reason media courses are very often in danger of becoming obsolete. Since university system is slow the syllabi often does not get modified with the result that media students are often founding wanting in basics by the industry.
It is for this reason that SIMS has decided to run a media think tank along with its academic programme. Moreover, it will also benefit our governance.
Our political system or governance has no system or source to get independent and unbiased policy inputs. The vested interests in bureaucracy and the corporate world give inputs which suits them and not the common man. Independent think tanks on socio-economic issues are therefore needed to give right inputs to the administrators and influence government policy in the interest of the masses. This is a job which SIMS has to do.
With four or five universities, two medical colleges, high court, bar, media and bureaucrats--serving and retired--there is no dearth of persons we need to run the think tank. Then outstation experts will be involved by Zoom.
