SIMS as a learning institution would not award diploma or degree courses for students on pattern of universities and institutes which are already doing this and there is no need to replicate the degree conferment. The scope of activities of SIMS will be to connect discover and join the dots that make a straight line to give an empowered mind, a reasoned analyst mind and develop techniques to understand interpret and bring change in module of media reporting and coverage. This can be achieved through the following four broad areas:
SIMS will run training programmes in media networking and outreach for govt functionaries, corporate executives, NGOs. and self-employed professionals to understand the issues and perspectives involved.
The areas covered initially will include health, education, environment, education and livelihood.
Myriad schemes for developmental work are in field both by Government and non-government actors in areas of public and human health, education and employment generation. However, the end result or impact of these schemes on targeted beneficiaries always remains a matter of debate or public polemics.
SIMS will help to teach methodology to conduct studies to evaluate the end impact of such schemes on socio- economic scenario of our society to draw out the correct postulates and factors the narratives involved and the actual triggering factors.
Mass communication has emerged as a major area of study attracting a lot of students everywhere. The advancement in IT technology on one hand and a fast changing social scenario on the other hand pose a serious challenge to the faculty teaching these subjects. The complexity of factors that contribute to a particular situation and the challenges posed require a holistic approach to understand interpret and do the findings.
SIMS through its faculty would help students build up the requisite psyche, better communication techniques, selecting research areas through use of appropriate software which will ultimately assist in clearing NET.
Emergence of social media in the past few days has seriously challenged the gatekeeping role of editors and unleashes the power of mass media in public domain. However, due to lack of proper orientation a sense of direction and training this is creating a climate of utter confusion which has seriously undermined media credibility.
On one hand it is giving rise to the phenomenon of fake news while on the other hand it is being used by vested interests to promote a distorted version of reality by undermining the legitimacy and credibility of Media as a Fourth pillar of Democracy. This necessitates to develop a critical mind to counter the trends born out of vested interests and bring hard facts to public domain for proper understanding and information.
SIMS will address this problem by conducting special sessions, seminars, workshops and media users' interaction forums. This will ultimately help people to repose faith in media which will empower the masses to know, understand facts for their consumption.
